The Brief

Designing a surgical knife was not 100 percently on brief. We had to design a cutting tool with replacable blades. Maybe capable of restoring multiple blades in its body. The teachers did not really think of surgical knife. I did. I am interested in the design of medical instruments, so I saw the possibility of designing one.

Research

The actual design phase was supported by a huge research. I was interviewing doctors about how they use and feel about the surgical knife, what the role of the knife in their profession is etc. I was examining ergonomy, how the knife interacts with the hand, how doctors use it.

Aim

I wanted to design an ergonomically better outfitted surgical knife than the most ones on the market and give it an exclusive look that doctors would love their tool and not just consider to be a tool of work. Like you use a Parker or a Mont-Blanc pen. I also engineered a new way of blade fitting that makes its application and release much easier to handle.
